PlanLab
Floor Projection Studio
Overview: During the COVID-19 lockdowns in Adelaide, Rivergum Homes launched an ambitious project to elevate the homebuying experience. Their vision was to create an innovative studio where prospective homeowners could engage in live consultations, making real-time adjustments to floor plans while experiencing the space at a 1:1 scale. This immersive “walk the plan” concept allowed clients to visualize and feel their future homes in an interactive, life-sized format. This bold project was a perfect fit for our expertise, despite being unlike any we had undertaken before. Our team thoroughly understood the deliverables and challenges ahead and used a carefully tailored approach to meet Rivergum’s vision with precision and professionalism.

Challenges and Solutions

1. Image Size and Projection
The chosen location in Mile End South offered an ideal, open space. Rivergum required a projection large enough to fit most properties in their portfolio, with additional space for office areas, a viewing deck, and amenities.
Our solution involved creating an expansive 24m x 14 projection area using four Epson EB-L1505UNL projectors (12,000 lumens each). Working closely with Epson, we designed a solution within budget that utilized specialized lenses for optimal image size and alignment. Each projector covered around 13m x 8m, with edge blending (feathering) applied for seamless visual integration across overlapping areas. To enhance image contrast, the floor surface was coated in a durable, commercial-grade grey paint that minimized reflections. Additionally, a fifth projector was installed to display content on an adjacent 15m-wide wall, adding versatility to the projection space.

2. Mounting and Rigging
Once we validated the projection sizes, the next challenge involved securely mounting the projectors, maintaining alignment, managing cabling, and achieving the desired industrial aesthetic.
Partnering with Acura Group, we designed a robust mounting solution. In collaboration with Adelaide-based engineers, we developed a cable-suspended Sikla frame system positioned nearly 6m above the floor. This setup provided a stable base, solving alignment, security, and cabling requirements. The rigging adhered to AS 1170.4:2007 earthquake resistance standards, using multiple 45° steel cables and Unistrut supports to secure stability within the building’s structure.

3. Operation and User Experience
PlanLab initially envisioned operating the space entirely via a tablet for seamless interaction. However, the required hardware proved costly and added complexity. Our recommended solution simplified the user experience: we configured the system as a dual-display setup, enabling familiar desktop-like control. Sales staff and consultants could easily operate the space using a wireless keyboard and mouse, reducing the learning curve and making the studio immediately accessible.4. Alignment and CalibrationThe four floor projectors required precise alignment to achieve a cohesive projection. Pixel groups in overlapping zones—especially the central area where all four images converged—were adjusted manually. The concrete slab also had minor deviations from construction, but the Epson projectors offered robust digital correction tools that enabled us to fine-tune alignment after the initial optical adjustments. TxRx ensured that the frame was installed squarely to the projection wall, with each projector level and plumb to minimize digital correction required and deliver an optimal viewing experience.
Project Achievements
1. Achievement of Target Image Size Through close collaboration with stakeholders and successful engineering, we achieved a projection size of over 24m x 14m, allowing PlanLab to incorporate moveable wall partitions, furniture, and other fixtures. This setup gave Rivergum customers a genuine feel for the space at a 1:1 ratio.
2. Successful Engineering and Long-Term StabilityThe frame design and precise alignment have proven highly effective, with no need for realignment even after four years. This stability highlights the success of the frame’s engineering, saving on specialised labour costs since the design and installation phases.

3. High-Quality Imaging: The studio’s automated blinds, a collaborative effort with Rivergum and the PlanLab design team, minimized ambient light, enabling the Epson projectors to deliver a vibrant, near-4K resolution image
4. Future Expandability The system’s modular wiring topology allows for future enhancements, such as wireless video casting, video streaming, and an audio system with wired inputs and outputs for event use, ensuring PlanLab remains versatile and adaptable

5. Grand Opening In December 2020, PlanLab was officially opened by the Honourable Steven Marshall, marking the beginning of a transformative experience for future homeowners and Rivergum clients.
